on college goals
When: Oct. 25 (Thursday), 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Where: Alamo Convocation Center, 110 Tuleta Drive
On Thursday, the message that a high school degree and college education can “Rock Your Future” will be reinforced to more than 3,000 SAISD 8th-graders during a college-themed rally of the same name.
Dr. Lawrence Scott, a product of SAISD and a counselor at Burbank High School, will deliver the keynote address, in which he will impress upon students the idea that each of them “can be the miracle.” His comments will conclude with the performance of an original rap song called “I Can Be.”
The purpose of the event, co-sponsored by GenTX San Antonio and SAISD’s GEAR UP partners, is to motivate the 8th-graders to embrace college-thinking, while also providing them with an opportunity to connect with other students in a high-energy, invigorating environment. The event will kick off with short games, a DJ will play music, and students will walk a red carpet to take group photos with signs that represent their college aspirations.
The entire 8th-grade class (class of 2017) is part of the federally funded GEAR UP program, formally known as Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. Students started in the program last year, as 7th-graders, giving them access to a host of support services and activities, including college readiness coaches and academic support, designed to prepare them for college. The students will be supported through their first year in college, in 2018.
