The upcoming presidential election is an excellent opportunity for students to learn about the election process and civic responsibility. Below are a few of the election-related learning activities happening at SAISD schools in the days leading up to and on Election Day, Nov. 6.        

Mock debate – Oct. 30, 2:45 p.m., Young Women’s Leadership Academy, 2123 W. Huisache Ave.
Members of the junior class at the all-girls school will host a mock debate involving three students, who will represent President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, as well as the Independent Party. A fourth student will pose as the moderator during the event, which the entire school will watch in the auditorium.

“Presidential candidates” greet students, parents – Nov. 1, 7:30-8 a.m., JT Brackenridge ES, 1214 Guadalupe St.
Students and parents will be greeted by staff members wearing Obama and Romney masks and dressed in suits, along with Uncle Sam, to generate excitement and enthusiasm for the school’s mock election, which will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Mock election – Nov. 6, 8:30-10:45 a.m., Fenwick ES, 1930 Waverly Ave.
Students in grades PK-5 will cast their votes in a mock election, with results shared before the end of the day (so students can see how they compare to that night’s election). Students, who will be encouraged to wear patriotic colors that day, will go to the “polls” (the cafeteria stage), where the 5th-graders will oversee the vote. Students will complete voter registration applications prior to the election and will receive voter cards they will need to show for participation in the mock election. For their civic participation, they will receive a “Kids Vote Too!” sticker.
