When:       Thursday (Dec. 6), 9:00 a.m.-9:30 a.m.

Where:      Herff Elementary School, 996 S. Hackberry St.

On Thursday (Dec. 6), a Herff Elementary School student’s wish will be granted when he receives a banana peel bike trucked in from the East Coast just for him, thanks to generous donors. The boy, a 2nd-grader at the school, was born with no arms and cannot ride a traditional bicycle with handlebars.

The story of the bike begins in Ocean City, Maryland, last month, shortly after the student told Principal Traci Smith that he wished he could ride a bike. Smith was visiting a friend there and announced plans to raise $600 to buy the boy a banana peel bike, which has three wheels, a recumbent canvas seat and rests low to the ground. The friend offered to donate a model her children no longer used, if Smith could cover the shipping. In the midst of Smith’s fundraising for the shipping cost, YRC Freight, which has an office in San Antonio, offered to convoy the bike to San Antonio – for free. The bike left Ocean City on Nov. 27, and is scheduled to arrive at Herff on Thursday. The surprise bike presentation will take place at 9 a.m. on school grounds, in the parking lot off of Olive Street, with all the school’s students gathered around.
