Next SAISD parent leaders to become first to graduate from Parent Academy
What: Next SAISD parent leaders to become first to graduate from
new College and Career Readiness Parent Academy
Where: UTSA downtown campus, Aula Canaria Auditorium,
Buena Vista Building
When: Dec. 19 (Wednesday), 7:00- 9:00 p.m.
They spent Saturdays over three months learning how to put their children on a solid path to college and developing the skills needed to carry the college message to other SAISD parents. And now, on Wednesday, these eight parents will don caps and gowns and walk the stage at the University of Texas at San Antonio’s downtown campus to become the inaugural graduating class of the new College and Career Readiness Parent Academy.
The academy is open to parents of students in SAISD’s GEAR UP college readiness program, which encompasses the entire class of 2017, or this year’s 8th-graders.To graduate, parents had to attend five six-hour classes on Saturdays, complete homework assignments and develop and give a class presentation worth a substantial part of their overall class grade. The academy focuses on the parents’ leadership development, planning for academic success for their children and financial literacy and is offered through a partnership with the UTSA Office of P-20 Initiatives. The idea is that the graduates will use their newly attained college knowledge and honed leadership skills to become ambassadors in recruiting other parents to visit colleges, explore careers with their children and support their child’s journey through high school and college.
