Jan. 26 (Sat) — Social Studies Department Annual Winter Conference for grades K-12
8 to 11:30 a.m. at the Education Service Center Region 20, 1314 Hines Avenue
This year’s theme will be “To Have and To Fold.” The annual conference, sponsored by SAISD’s Department of Social Studies, will include half-day sessions focusing on building vocabulary, writing, critical thinking, and analyzing primary sources.
Jan. 26 (Sat) — Student Aid Saturday
10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Jefferson High School, 723 Donaldson Ave.
Teens aspiring to higher education and their parents or guardians will receive free help in completing their federal and state financial aid applications. Student Aid Saturdays is a collaborative effort between the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, FirstMark Credit Union, SA2020, San Antonio Education Partnership, Gen TX-San Antonio and local colleges and universities. The citywide goal is to increase by 5 percent the number of parents and students completing applications for federal and state aid this academic year. This will be the first in a series of Student Aid Saturdays to be held citywide through April 27.
Jan. 28-31 — Free family fitness classes
5 to 6 p.m. at the SAISD schools listed below.
The popular Zumba dance fitness program is being offered to the community weekly at eight District campuses. The free classes are in partnership with Health Collaborative, a local network of citizens, community organizations and businesses. Upcoming sessions will be:

Jan. 29 (Tues) — Students and Buddy the dog to celebrate start of school construction
1:30 p.m. at Fenwick Elementary School, 1930 Waverly Ave.
In honor of work transforming their campus into a modern facility, youngsters will come attired in hard hats and hold miniature shovels for a special assembly where they will learn about what is happening at their school. In addition to presentations by the architect and contractor, the event will feature a performance by Buddy, the canine construction mascot. The all-new Fenwick will be courtesy of $11.9 million in SAISD Bond 2010 funds. It is among 22 schools to undergo major renovation through the bond program.

Qualified citizens interested in serving as an SAISD Trustee for places 1, 3, 4 and 7 may obtain informational packets including: qualifications for office; application for a place on the SAISD general election ballot; campaign finance guide; appointment of a campaign treasurer by a candidate; code of fair campaign practices; candidate/officeholder campaign finance report form; important May 2013 election dates; and 2013 filing schedule for reports.
