Campus-based recycling program a rewarding experience
Campus-based recycling program a rewarding experience
SAISD students are receiving resources for their schools and for charitable groups while helping to save the planet at the same time.
Through participating in the Dream Machine Recycle Rally - a collaboration between PepsiCo, Waste Management and Keep America Beautiful - students can accumulate points to be redeemed for products including electronics, sporting goods, educational events, books and videos.
SAISD is one of only two San Antonio school districts offering this type of recycling program.
In addition to rewarding schools, the District has saved $84,000 in mixed solid waste pick up since the program was implemented last year and has kept 612 tons of recyclables out of landfills. For bottles recycled through this program, PepsiCo also donates money to the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities. This national program educates disabled post-9/11 veterans in small business management and related topics.Resources for the Dream Machine Recycle Rally that include dumpsters and barcode scanners are provided free for the schools by PepsiCo.
By participating in the program, SAISD schools also compete with other campuses nationwide for the highest average number of bottles and cans collected per student. The winning school will receive $50,000 to be used toward green improvements. Waste Management of South Texas has sent materials to all SAISD schools. For general information about this effort visit: www.dreammachinerecyclerally.com.
