Gloria Garcia is an innovator who has high expectations for her Smith Elementary School students and who has been using the Scholastic System 44 reading program to turn around students’ lives.
These are among the factors considered when Scholastic picked Garcia as its 2013 System 44 Outstanding Educator. She beat out other System 44 educators across the country to earn the distinction and is the first in San Antonio to ever receive this honor.
On Tuesday, her accomplishment will be recognized by Scholastic during a school assembly of 4th- and 5th-graders. A representative of the company will present her with an oversized check for $1,200 to spend as she pleases. Students and parents will be on hand to provide testimonials about Garcia.
For nominating Garcia to win this award, Smith Principal Lianna Cano will receive an Xtra Library and $1,000 worth of Scholastic materials for her school. In addition to Tuesday’s event, Garcia will fly to New York City in August on an all-expenses-paid trip to Scholastic headquarters. During her stay there, she will be recognized during a celebratory dinner and will be invited to participate as a member of the READ 180 and System 44 Advisory Board.
Fifty-two SAISD campuses use either READ 180 or System 44 Scholastic programs, or both, to help struggling students catch up.
To transform SAISD into a national model urban school district where every child graduates and is educated so that he or she is prepared to be a contributing member of the community.
