June 1 (Sat) —Second Annual Bowden Fun Run
8:30 a.m. at Bowden Elementary School, 515 Willow St.
The entire East Side community is invited to this event featuring fitness and fun. This year’s Bowden Fun Run is being held in partnership with Pershing and Washington elementaries and Wheatley Middle School, and also will include a book giveaway, music, a moon bounce and an appearance by H-E-Buddy, whose company H-E-B is among the sponsors. Others are the Dignowity Hill Neighborhood Association, KLRN-TV, Roly Poly’s Bicycle Club, the San Antonio Public Library and Select Federal Credit Union.
June 4, 5 and 6 — ‘It’s A Bird! It’s A Plane! It’s Superman The Musical!’
7 p.m. at Brackenridge High School, 400 Eagleland Drive
No, that’s not the school’s mascot the Eagle up in the sky, but the iconic man of steel himself. Combing their efforts to bring a fun close to the school year will be the school choir, dance and drama department for their production of the musical version of Superman.

Recently-elected District 1 Trustee Steve Lecholop is hosting a meeting for the Bonham Academy community.
June 6 (Thurs) — Bike giveaway
10 a.m. at Madison Elementary School, 2900 W. Woodlawn Ave.
Close to 90 students whose attendance was perfect this school year will have a new set of wheels to enjoy over the summer break. Invited guests will include Bexar County 436th District Court Judge Lisa Jarrett and corporate sponsors Cavender Toyota, Isite Architects and Jefferson Bank.
June 6 (Thurs) — YWLA’s first graduation ceremony
6 p.m. at the Young Women’s Leadership Academy, 2123 W. Huisache Ave.
Three outstanding students of San Antonio’s only all-girls public school, who are graduating a year early, have the added distinction of comprising YWLA’s first-ever graduating class. The first official senior class of this combined middle and high school that made its debut in 2008 will be in 2014. In a separate honor, YWLA recently was named Texas’ best middle school by the Houston-based advocacy group Children at Risk.

June 7 (Fri) — Schoolwide performance of ‘Billie Jean’
9 a.m. at De Zavala Elementary, 2311 San Luis St.
In celebration of the last day of school, more than 400 students will don fedoras as they dance to this Michael Jackson classic. Their performance of “Billie Jean” will be the result of four week’s worth of rehearsal, and was designed to exemplify how physical fitness, teamwork and listening skills contribute to academic success.
