July 27 (Sat) — SAISD superintendent to be inducted into the National Hispanic Heritage Hall of Honor
6 p.m. at the Omni Hotel at the Colonnade, 9821 Colonnade Blvd.
Dr. Sylvester Perez will be honored by the Hispanic Sports Foundation for Education for his outstanding contributions to education. He will be among seven persons inducted into the National Hispanic Heritage Hall of Honor in different categories. Honorees are chosen for their distinguished service and inspirational character.


July 27 (Sat) — GEAR UP Roller Coaster Builder (Third of three in July)
9 a.m. 4 p.m. (2:30 to 3 p.m. best photo op) at the Claude Black Center, 2805 E. Commerce St.
The STEM fields of science technology, engineering and math will come to life for about 40 incoming freshmen Districtwide through the building of a miniature roller coaster. They will learn the physics behind the steep inclines and death-defying loops while understanding the mechanics of how roller coasters work. This opportunity is part of GEAR UP, Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, designed to help the class of 2017 prepare for success in higher education and beyond. Roller Coaster Builder is offered in partnership with the University of Texas at San Antonio and the UTSA Interactive Technology Experience Center.


July 29 thru Aug. 1 — GEAR UP visit to Café College
8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.  at Café College, 131 El Paso St.
Students will receive tools to become college experts and leaders at their campus charged with spreading the word about the importance of pursuing college and career goals along with the steps along the journey The week’s activities will conclude on Aug. 2 with a trip to the University of Texas at Austin.


July 29 thru Aug. 2 — AP summer camp
9 a.m. 1 p.m.  at the Young Women’s Leadership Academy, 2123 W. Huisache Ave.
Students will receive tools to become college experts and leaders at their campus charged with spreading the word about the importance of pursuing college and career goals along with the steps along the journey The week’s activities will conclude on Aug. 2 with a trip to the University of Texas at Austin.


July 30-31— Pre-kinder program application process

8 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. at all SAISD elementaries
Applications are being accepted for the District’s acclaimed pre-kindergarten program. Parents should apply at their child’s home campus. To qualify, children must be 3 or 4 on or before Sept. 1, and also meet other criteria including need. For more information call 554-2410 or visit www.saisd.net.


Ongoing thru Aug. 9 — EPN Kinder Camp for SAISD students

8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the addresses listed below
Incoming kindergarteners who will attend select District elementaries have the opportunity to meet their teachers, explore their campus and prepare for the upcoming school year. The camp is offered in affiliation with the Eastside Promise Neighborhood federal grant program. The participating schools are:

● Bowden Elementary School, 515 Willow St.

● Pershing Elementary School, 600 Sandmeyer St.

● Washington Elementary School, 1823 Nolan St.
