Aug. 5-9 —YWLA summer camps
9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Young Women’s Leadership Academy, 2123 W. Huisache Ave.
Students at San Antonio’s only all-girls public school are getting a jumpstart on the new school year through learning opportunities including:
● CSI Camp - Incoming 9th- and 10th-graders will utilize science and mathematical concepts to complete crime investigations. The camp also will include a presentation from the San Antonio Police Department on what it takes to make it as a cadet.
●.Space Camp – Working in teams, incoming 7th-graders will investigate the engineering process through space studies.
●.Academic Camp – Incoming 6th-graders will learn how to develop good study habits and being part of the YWLA sisterhood.
Aug. 6-9 — Registration for 2013-14 school year
8 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m., with extended hours on certain days (see below) at all SAISD schools
All new and returning students to the District need to register at the school they will attend. Wednesday’s registration time will be extended until 7 into the evening for all and on Thursday for high school students only. Also during registration, elementary- and middle school-aged students who attend any of the 62 campuses hosting After-School Challenge also may be signed up for this program. The first day of classes for all SAISD students is Monday, Aug. 26.
Aug. 6-9 — College-readiness coaches and parents to provide backpacks to all freshmen
8 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Aug. 7 and 8 at all SAISD high schools
As part of their participation in the college-prep Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, all SAISD freshmen will receive backpacks filled with essentials to help them start high school well prepared for learning. Handing out the backpacks will be their school’s GEAR UP college readiness coaches and parent volunteers.
Aug. 7-9 — Medical Camp
9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the UT Heath Science Center, 7703 Floyd Curl Drive
Through a unique partnership with St. Mary’s University and UTHSC, Young Women’s Leadership Academy incoming 7th-graders and select high school-level students will get an in-depth look into the field of medicine. The camp will include a tour of a cadaver lab as well as participation in classroom hands-on experiences and lectures.
Ongoing thru Aug. 9 — EPN Kinder Camp for SAISD students
8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the addresses listed below
Incoming kindergarteners who will attend select District elementaries have the opportunity to meet their teachers, explore their campus and prepare for the upcoming school year. The camp is offered in affiliation with the Eastside Promise Neighborhood federal grant program. The participating schools are:
● Bowden Elementary School, 515 Willow St.
● Pershing Elementary School, 600 Sandmeyer St.
● Washington Elementary School, 1823 Nolan St.
