Students at San Antonio’s only all-girls public school are getting a jumpstart on the new school year through learning opportunities including:
● San Antonio Botanical Gardens Camp, 555 Funston Place - Incoming 8th-graders will study basic biological processes and concepts through a series of hands-on investigations, field lessons and guest expert presentations.
●. Martial Arts Camp, at the Young Women’s Leadership Academy, 2123 W. Huisache Ave. - Middle- and high school-level students will learn self-defense techniques and healthy-living guidelines
Aug. 23 (Fri) — Districtwide employee convocation
9 to 10:30 a.m. at the AT&T Center, 1 AT&T Center Parkway
“Every Student Needs a Champion” will be the theme when the more than 7,500-member SAISD family of employees gathers to welcome 2013-14. Keynote speaker for Convocation 2013 will be Superintendent Dr. Sylvester Perez. Guest speakers will include Mayor Julián Castro, and there also will be a special recognition for District 26 state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte in honor of her contributions to public education. Both are alums of SAISD’s Jefferson High School.
Aug. 23 (Fri) — Ice cream social and summer review
5 to 9 p.m. at Jefferson High School, 723 Donaldson Ave.
This annual Jefferson High School extravaganza featuring food, fun and entertainment provides students, staff and alumni an opportunity to celebrate the upcoming school year. Beverages and hotdog and hamburger plates will be sold starting at 5 p.m. in the cafeteria where spirit items will be for sale, Festivities move to TJHS Pony Field at 7 p.m. for free ice cream, courtesy of the Deco H-E-B. Pass and Review, the traditional parade featuring student spirit groups and athletes, follows at 7:30 p.m. Emcee will be KSAT-TV sports anchor and Jefferson alum Greg Simmons. This year’s event also will celebrate the school’s new all-weather track, made possible through SAISD Bond 2010.
Aug. 23 (Fri) — SAISD summer graduation ceremony
7 p.m. at Brackenridge High School, 400 Eagleland Drive at South St. Mary’s Street
The colors of all SAISD high schools will be represented in this commencement ceremony for 12th-graders Districtwide who completed graduation requirements by attending summer school.
