SAISD signs Letter of Intent toward UIW partnership

Following the Sept. 9, 2013 Board meeting, San Antonio ISD signed a non-binding Letter of Intent (LOI) between SAISD and the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) which lays out the major components of an agreement to lease property to UIW at the Fox Tech High School campus for UIW’s future School of Osteopathic Medicine.  Both parties will continue working with Centro Partnership to develop a final contract.

“We look forward to working together toward a definitive agreement,” SAISD Superintendent Dr. Sylvester Perez said. “This is an example of how public-private educational partnerships can pave a path to success for our students. As we strive for continued progress in SAISD, we must seize these types of high-value opportunities that give our students a learning advantage.”

Key benefits to SAISD include:

• Cash payment of $1.5 million payable over a two-year period – to enhance the expansion and sustainability of SAISD’s health careers programs at Fox Tech and Edison high schools and Whittier Middle School.

• Annual scholarships of $3,000 per year (over and above its regular scholarship amounts) from its catalog rates for any SAISD graduating senior that meets UIW’s admissions requirements and elects to enroll full time in any UIW undergraduate degree program. This is in addition to other financial assistance a student may qualify for already.

• An endowment of $100,000 annually for SAISD students, who meet requirements, to pursue a graduate degree at one of UIW’s health-related professional schools.

• Financial aid for SAISD faculty through $50,000 annually in scholarship support for UIW graduate degree programs.

• Partnership agreement to provide in-kind benefits in support of SAISD health careers programs. The proposed 25-year ground lease is for 2.5 to 3 acres on the Fox Tech campus. The agreement is contingent upon city and county funding of infrastructure upgrades on the property.
