KLRN advance screening of documentary on SAISD initiative

Community Cinema, presented by the Independent Television Service (ITVS) and KLRN will present an advance screening of the short documentary Skipping Up, which features students from Mark Twain Middle School participating in SAISD’s Middle School Partner’s program, a dropout prevention program.

The preview, which is open to the public, will be held October 17 at 7 p.m. at Santikos Embassy 14 Theater.

The Middle School Partners program targets eighth-grade students who have been retained at least one grade. Under the program, students earn eighth-grade and high school credits at the same time, to enable them to bypass their freshman year and enter high school as sophomores and graduate with their peers. The program was first piloted in January of 2010 at two middle schools, and then expanded to all 14 middle schools after the District was awarded a $14M, 5-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education in October of 2010.

KLRN will also screen at the event Bernardo Ruiz’s The Graduates/Los Graduados, a film exploring the many roots of the Latino dropout crisis through the eyes of six inspiring young students from across the United States who are part of the burgeoning movement to increase graduation rates for the nation’s growing Latino population. Much more than a survey of contemporary policy debates, the student profiles in The Graduates offer a first-hand perspective on the special challenges facing Latino high school students, including dangerous and overcrowded schools, gang culture, pressure to contribute to the family finances, teen pregnancy, and more.
