A significantly upgraded Cameron Elementary School will open its doors to the community to showcase and celebrate the completion of Bond 2010 renovations, transforming the East Side campus into a modern and vibrantly colorful 21st-century learning environment.

Cameron is the first of 22 campuses receiving major renovations to be fully completed, and students are scheduled to resume classes there in August.

The event is an occasion to bring together members of the Cameron family to celebrate the new school as a source of community pride. At the event, attendees will have an opportunity to tour the school, following comments by principal Pamela Walls-Tankerson and Trustee James Howard, whose single-member district includes Cameron. The Sam Houston High School Jazz Band will provide musical entertainment, and attendees will have the opportunity to stop by a “photo booth” to produce a keepsake.

Inspired by Google’s colorful logo, Cameron’s new open floor plan boasts a series of bright, airy spaces meant to stimulate creativity and learning for students and staff. The new design takes advantage of natural light, reducing the number of needed light fixtures. Exposed infrastructure, including painted ducts, will serve as an educational tool that allows students to visually associate the elements that make up a building.

Among the highlights of the $12.3 million renovation are a refurbished library and cafeteria, science labs, additional classrooms, art and music labs, a courtyard conducive to outdoor learning and, as its crown jewel, a glass-enclosed front entry that establishes the school’s new contemporary look. Renovations to other campuses under the $515 million bond program voters approved in November 2010 are in progress.
