March 22 (Sat) — Friends of Bonham Run/Walk
8 a.m. starting at the Blue Star Arts Complex, 116 Blue Star
Proceeds from this event to be held along the Mission Reach will benefit SAISD’s Bonham Academy. Run/Walk sponsor is the non-profit organization Friends of Bonham. For more information visit: www.friendsofbonham.org.

March 22 (Sat) — Student Aid Saturday
10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sam Houston High School, 4635 E. Houston St.
Teens aspiring to higher education and their parents or guardians will receive free help in completing their federal and state financial aid applications. Student Aid Saturdays is a collaborative effort between the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, FirstMark Credit Union, SA2020, San Antonio Education Partnership, Gen TX-San Antonio and local colleges and universities.

March 22 (Sat) — SAISD students to be recognized at the ‘Do the Write Thing Challenge’ banquet
11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Bright Shawl, 819 Augusta St.
More than 30 middle school-level students Districtwide will be among those from throughout Bexar County recognized as finalists in the “Do the Write Thing Challenge” essay contest. Sponsors include District Attorney Susan Reed and the National Campaign to Stop Violence Coalition.

March 22 (Sat) — District Trustee to be inducted into ‘2014 Educator’s Hall of Fame’
Noon at the Second Baptist Church Community Center, 3310 E. Commerce St
Inductees will include SAISD School Board Assistant Secretary James Howard, who will be recognized during a luncheon hosted by sponsor the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Gamma Tau Chapter. Howard was selected through recommendation from his peers in honor of his contributions to education.

March 24 (Mon) — Sheriff featured Women’s History Month speaker
1 p.m. at the Young Women’s Leadership Academy, 2123 W. Huisache Ave.
Susan Parmerleau, the first woman elected as Bexar County sheriff, will address seniors at San Antonio’s only all-girls public school in honor of Women’s History Month.

March 24 (Mon) — School Board meeting
5:30 p.m. at Burnet Center, 406 Barrera St.

March 24-27 — House Bill 5 community meetings
6 p.m. (unless otherwise noted.) Locations at the SAISD schools listed below.
Students and their parents can learn about the state’s new graduation requirements at a series of meetings. Upcoming will be:

● March 24 (Mon) at 5 p.m. – Rogers Middle School, 314 Galway St.

March 25 (Tues) — Tuition-supported pre-kinder parent information session
6 p.m. at Lamar Elementary School, 201 Parland Place
Parents whose children do not qualify for state-funded pre-kinder are invited to find out how to take advantage of SAISD’s acclaimed program offered at this Mahncke Park neighborhood school on a tuition basis. To qualify, the child must be 3- or 4-years-old by Sept. 1 and meet other eligibility requirements. Lamar also will continue to offer pre-kinder for students who qualify for the state-funded program.

March 25 (Tues) — SAISD Council of PTAs general meeting
6:30 p.m. at Lanier High School, 1514 W. César Chávez Blvd.
The public is invited to meetings of PTA chapter representatives Districtwide.

March 26 (Wed) — Gardening project in partnership with UIW
8 to 9 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. at Carroll ECEC, 463 Holmgreen Road
University of the Incarnate Word professor Dr. Ruth Moore and her students will help 3- and 4-year-old students tend to a vegetable garden that has been planted in the school’s atrium area. The gardening is part of an ongoing partnership between Moore, an early childhood education advocate, and Carroll to promote healthy living.

March 26 (Wed) — ‘STAAR’y Night carnival
3 to 7 p.m. at Rhodes Middle School, 3000 Tampico St.
Students will have the opportunity to enjoy fun and games, tasty treats and prizes prior to taking the upcoming State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness exam. 

March 27 (Thurs) — Annual Walk With the Principal
6:30 p.m. at Edison High School, Edison High School, 701 Santa Monica Drive
This community-wide health, fitness and diabetes awareness event takes place on the school’s lighted track, which also is open to the public during non-school hours.   

March 29 (Sat) — 4E Run/Walk and Health Festival
8:30 a.m. at Brooks City Base, 3201 Sidney Brooks Drive             
The community is invited to join the 4E (Education, Exercise, Engagement, Empowerment) with festivities beginning with a 5K and 10K Run/Walk. Event sponsors are SAISD and the SAISD Foundation. For more information and to register online go to the event section at: www.saisdfoundation.com.

March 29 (Sat) — Family Fitness Fair
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Carroll Early Childhood Education Center, 463 Holmgreen Road
The fair will feature a 1K run/walk, free health screenings, information on community resources and a free child car seat giveaway.

Ongoing Mondays thru Thursdays – March 24-27 — Free family fitness classes
5:20 p.m. at the SAISD schools listed below.
The popular Zumba dance fitness program is offered free to the community weekly at eight District campuses. Classes are in partnership with Health Collaborative, a local network of citizens, community organizations and businesses. Zumba will run through June 6. Upcoming sessions will be:
