Hundreds of high school students are learning about specialized fields of study this week by participating in Summer Career Academies that could help them pave a path toward a future career.
These free one- to two-week academies, which are taking place throughout the summer, provide hands-on, engaging experiences in a variety of careers and include college and/or workplace field trips. They are serving SAISD’s incoming 10th-graders, who can choose to attend one or more academies of their choice, regardless of which District high school they attend.
Please contact the SAISD Communications Department at (210) 554-2250 to arrange a visit to the following academies:
June 18, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Sam Houston High School, 4635 E. Houston St.
College and career are front and center at this academy, with students engaging in diverse activities designed to get them thinking about their future. Students are learning about a variety of colleges and careers through workshops by career experts, taking virtual college tours and visiting workplaces for a first-hand look at real-world settings. On Wednesday, they will try their hand at design after hearing a guest lecture by an architect.
June 19, 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., St. Philip’s College Southwest Campus, one of the Alamo Colleges
During the above time, students in this academy will be building composite panels in exploration of the latest aerospace materials. This camp is designed for students who are interested in flying, building or repairing planes and who want to know more about careers related to the aerospace industry.
