SAISD Launches “History in the Making” Facebook Page

September 23, 2009 -- The San Antonio Independent School District today announced it has launched a Facebook page associated with its “History in the Making” community outreach campaign.  The new site will offer students a place to post their own stories about how they are working to prepare themselves for college, careers and, ultimately, making a difference in their community.  The page will be open to all including staff, students, parents, community members. SAISD alumni will also be sought out for their stories and words of encouragement for current students.

SAISD’s venture into the social networking site is part of efforts to reach different audiences interested in the District’s schools, programs, news and events. “The ‘History in the Making’ concept is about highlighting that SAISD has so much to be proud of – from stellar alumni and exceptional students to the number of diverse programs we offer students at both our traditional and special-focus schools,” said Leslie Price, SAISD executive director of communications.  “While we’ll be promoting a handful of outstanding graduates and current students in posters and ads, we know there are so many more stories that can be told.  Facebook allows us a new venue for students and alumni to write about their own experiences at SAISD which hopefully will inspire other students and create a sense of community pride.”

Mayor Julián Castro, a Jefferson High School graduate, and Astronaut Bernard Harris, a graduate from Sam Houston High School, are the first two SAISD alumni to be featured in the ‘History in the Making’ campaign, paired with SAISD students representing different schools and programs. These pieces will be featured in a photo album on SAISD’s fan page with more to come.

Also featured will be more photo albums with pictures from major district-wide events, links to the District website, programs, superintendent’s message and other important and helpful venues for students, parents and the community; discussion boards where questions will be posed to students asking for their input on a variety of topics; and a calendar listing dates for district-wide events.

Any member of Facebook can be a fan of SAISD simply by entering the keyword “SAISD” into the Web site’s search engine. Members should find a link to the SAISD “History in the Making” page and by clicking “Become a fan” they can instantly be a part of the District’s page.
