When:       Aug. 24 (Mon)

Where:      Schools and locations Districtwide (Details follow below)

A new superintendent, new traditions and new facilities will mark the new school year for SAISD. Following are some of the first-day-of- school highlights.

• 6 to 6:30 a.m. at the District’s transportation facility, 1103 Austin St.
Superintendent Pedro Martinez will address, via radio, drivers already aboard their buses to wish them a happy new school year, and will greet transportation employees still at the depot.

• 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. at Japhet Elementary, 314 Astor St., near I-37 and Fair Avenue.
The new superintendent will join school staff in greeting students to a colorful “new” campus boasting $18.6 million in renovations through SAISD Bond 2010. Japhet is one of seven elementaries with bond-funded renovations being completed this summer.
A part of Japhet’s renovations were completed last year; students will be seeing the fully renovated campus on the first day. Amenities include art and music rooms, science and computer labs, new cafeterium and kitchen, age-appropriate playgrounds with sun shades, infrastructure improvements and more.
In addition to its new facility, Japhet will welcome new family members: students who previously attended the nearby Steele Elementary (it closed at the end of last year).

• 8 a.m. (for early arrival. School starts at 8:30 a.m.) at the Young Men’s Leadership Academy, 545 S. W.W. White Road.
The city’s first all-boys public school will open with some 300 inaugural students.  The day will begin with an assembly, an activity that will continue each school day.  High expectations, as well as exemplifying the traits of character, leadership and discipline, will be hallmarks of the new school. The school will open  with 4th, 5th and 6th grades and expand to 8th grade by 2018.

• 8:15 to 9 a.m. at Bonham Academy, 925 S. St. Mary’s St.
A “Yahoo Boo Hoo Breakfast” will be provided to parents of kindergartners and others needing back-to-school/new school support upon bidding their child goodbye on the first day of school.  Parents are invited to gather in the library, to ask questions of school staff and get to know other parents.
