Lanier HS introduces poet-in-residence
What: Lanier HS to host Poetry Party to celebrate inauguration of new poet-in-residence
When: Friday (Sept. 25), 2:30 p.m. - 4:15 p.m.
Where: Lanier High School, 1514 W. Cesar E. Chavez Blvd. (In library)
A literary community is budding at Lanier High School, where poetry is leading students to a love of language and writing. Creative writing classes were introduced at this West Side school two years ago, and this year, the growing program has introduced a poet-in-residence, a position made possible by funding from the SAISD Foundation.
On Friday, creative writing students and staff will come together for a Poetry Party celebrating the inauguration of poet-in-residence Christopher Martinez, San Antonio's 2014 Grand Slam Champion. At the event, students will read out loud or perform original poetry, receiving feedback from Martinez and internationally acclaimed poet and San Antonio resident Naomi Shihab Nye.
In his position as poet-in-residence, Martinez will work with creative writing students between two and three times a week and will conduct writing workshops throughout the year. In addition, a poetry club called Blue Ink began this year, with students meeting twice a week to write, read and discuss their work.
In addition to his title of Grand Slam Champion, Christopher "Rooster" Martinez is a writer, performer, a published poet, mentor and educator. He also is an organizer for Fresh Ink Youth Slam, among other literary endeavors in the community.
