What:   Celebrate a 2015 National Blue Ribbon School award

When:   Dec. 2 (Wed) – 2 p.m.

Where:  YWLA auditorium, 2123 W. Huisache Ave.

Festivities will celebrate San Antonio’s only girl’s public school’s most prestigious in a long line of honors earned for academic excellence – a 2015 National Blue Ribbon award.  The event also will provide an opportunity to show off the 2015 National Blue Ribbon School plaque that Principal Delia McLerran was presented at a November recognition ceremony held in Washington, D.C.

YWLA was the only Bexar County school to receive the honor and among just 25 public and three private campuses in Texas and 303 nationwide recognized for exemplary high performance as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests. Since opening in 2008, YWLA has maintained a consistently high level of achievement, earning multiple honors including being ranked among the state’s top campuses - culminating in this latest accolade.

An accomplished female role model will provide the keynote speech for students at this college-prep school focusing on math, science and technology - fields typically underrepresented by women. She is Janie Martinez Gonzalez, who, in addition to being a graduate of SAISD - the District's Burbank High School - is a successful business woman. As a college student in 1994, she founded Webhead with about $500 in cash and credit cards during the early stages of the World Wide Web as a way to break the cycle of poverty and stereotypes of Latina working women. Gonzalez went on to become one of the first Hispanic women to own and operate a technology company on San Antonio’s West Side. Under her leadership, the business became an industry leader in successfully managing, developing and supporting a customer portfolio of nearly $25 million in revenue for software development and engineering services.

Blue Ribbon Schools is a U.S. Department of Education program founded in 1982 to recognize public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students perform at very high levels.
