Superintendent Pedro Martinez expected to speak 11:40 a.m.-noon

Where:      Alamo Convocation Center, 110 Tuleta St.

At this working lunch, SAISD will call on some 300 fathers to partner with the District in its pursuit of excellence for all students by identifying ways they can help their children achieve their academic and career goals.

Superintendent Pedro Martinez will serve as the keynote speaker, sharing the SAISD Blueprint for Excellence: Target 2020. The blueprint outlines how the District plans to achieve by 2020 the 10 bold academic goals that it has set so as to ensure that many more of SAISD’s 53,000 students are performing at higher levels. Achieving the goals will require an “all-in” effort by those in a position to impact student success, with fathers playing a critical role.

This event is not open to the general public. Participants registered for the event at their child’s school.

After Mr. Martinez speaks, AVANCE-San Antonio, a non-profit organization that for decades has provided parent education and support programs, will lead fathers in an activity where they are challenged to identify ways to take their engagement at home, school and in the community to the next level to support their child’s academic success.

According to “A Call to Commitment: Fathers’ Involvement in Children’s Learning,” a report of the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, “Research has shown that fathers, no matter what their income or cultural background, can play a critical role in their children’s education. When fathers are involved, their children learn more, perform better in school, and exhibit healthier behavior. Even when fathers do not share a home with their children, their active involvement can have a lasting and positive impact.”

A program of SAISD’s Parent & Family Engagement Department, Fathers in Action launched in 2014-15 as part of the District’s on-going efforts to encourage male role models, including SAISD fathers, grandfathers and uncles, to become more engaged in their child’s or family member’s education. In addition to fellowship, the event’s purpose is to provide a forum where males can share ideas and create goals and initiatives that further their engagement to increase student achievement.
