What: 500+ SAISD parents to gather for half-day Parent Summit focused on academics, partnering for excellence
When: Thursday (March 10), 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Where: Norris Conference Center, 618 NW Loop 410, #207 (Park North Shopping Center)
“Pursuing Academic Excellence Together” will be the focus of this half-day learning conference, which is expected to draw more than 500 parents as partners in SAISD’s efforts to redefine excellence for all students.
NOTE: This event is not open to the public; parents have signed up in advance to attend.
Superintendent Pedro Martinez will provide the keynote address from 9:10-9:30 a.m. Mr. Martinez joined SAISD in June 2015 and worked with staff to develop the SAISD Blueprint for Excellence: Target 2020 to ensure that many more of the District’s approximately 53,000 students are performing at higher levels.
The Parent Summit is part of SAISD’s on-going efforts to strengthen family-school partnerships and build parent capacity to help increase student achievement toward college and career success. The summit will provide parents interactive, informative and engaging opportunities to learn relevant strategies to support their children for academic success.
Parents will have an opportunity to stop by exhibitor booths to include a number of SAISD departments that provide student services; Family Service Association; Methodist Healthcare Ministries; Workforce Solutions Alamo; San Antonio College and BiblioTech, Bexar County’s digital library.
A program of SAISD’s Parent & Family Engagement Department, the event is held twice each school year.
Some of the more visual sessions include:
· Shake Things Up: Engineering Earthquake-Resistant Buildings
The SAISD Science Department will share ways parents can harness their child’s natural curiosity, creativity and problem-solving skills through engineering. Parents will build their own earthquake-resistant structure and get ideas about activities they can do at home with their children using simple household items. 10:05-10:55 a.m. and 11-11:50 a.m. in the Cypress Room.
· The Word Game
This session will focus on the wonderful world of words, sharing with participants some hands-on activities they can do with their children to help them develop a wide-ranging vocabulary. 10:05-10:55 a.m. and 11-11:50 a.m. in the Elm Room
· Communities United for Education (CUPE): Families Working Together for Education and Student Success
Parents who have been engaged in CUPE, a family program at SAISD’s Crockett and Douglass elementary schools under a partnership between SAISD and UTSA for Community Lab Schools at those campuses, will share their experiences and ways the program has assisted them in helping their children at home. 10:05-10:55 a.m. in the Red Oak Ballroom A
· There's a U for YOU!
SAISD’s Academic Support Department and GEAR UP team will share with parents tips for helping their child select the “U” (University) that is their best fit. This session will extend the college conversation beyond the classroom. 11:55 a.m.-12:45 p.m. in the Elm Room
