SAISD names principal to head new advanced learning academy
Parents may apply now for students K-10 in 2016-17

March 24, 2016 – San Antonio ISD has named Emily “Kathy” Bieser as principal for a new PK-12 advanced learning academy that will open in August 2016. Bieser currently is principal of the International School of the Americas (ISA), a magnet school in the North East Independent School District.

Bieser has spent 18 years in education and is recognized for utilizing a globalized “gifted curriculum for all” model to serve a diverse student body, achieving exemplary results.

She has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, Master of Arts in Teaching and a Master of Education in School Administration, all from Trinity University. She also serves as an adjunct faculty member for the university.

“We are very pleased to bring in this innovative leader to lead a new school for San Antonio, dedicated to providing creative and academic challenges for students,” SAISD Superintendent Pedro Martinez said. “Kathy Bieser has a track record of successfully creating a culture of enriched learning for both students and staff, and we are excited to welcome her to the SAISD family.”

SAISD announced on March 8 plans to establish a new academy for students who seek academic challenge and opportunities for acceleration. This school will be open to any student who has the interest and desire − both students who may be identified as gifted, but also other students who are highly motivated and eager for advanced learning and creative challenges.

The academy also will serve as a new professional development school and learning laboratory for aspiring teachers and principals in partnership with Trinity University. Teacher interns will work side-by-side with master teachers to earn a graduate degree through the university. The model school will create a pipeline of highly trained teachers for SAISD campuses to support all students eager for advanced learning.

The District will take student applications starting today through May 31 for the 2016-17 school year, for grades K-10 (pre-k and the 11th and 12th grades will be added over the next two years).

Applications are available online at: www.saisd.net/advancedacademy. Parents may also pick up an application at the SAISD Office of Academics, located at 406 Barrera St., Suite #5, and should call 210-554-2524 in advance.

The new academy will be located across two nearby campuses, with the majority of grades housed at the Fox Tech High School campus on North Main Avenue and other grades housed at West Euclid Avenue, which currently is the site of Austin Academy. Fox Tech magnet programs will remain at that campus, while Austin Academy closes at the end of this year, as previously announced.
