To ensure students maintain and improve reading proficiency while school is out of session, all 10,703 incoming 6–8 grade students are receiving summer book packs to take home to encourage reading while away from school. To kick off summer reading, a book distribution event will be held at Wheatley Middle School today.

Each student will receive his or her own backpack and set of five books, ensuring access to quality reading materials at home and encouraging reading as a leisure activity. The book packs will be customized by Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company.

In partnership with the Spurs Sports & Entertainment Rodeo Read Trip, the San Antonio Spurs Silver Dancers and former San Antonio Spurs MVP George "The Iceman" Gervin will visit Wheatley Middle School to encourage and instill the joy of reading.

The literacy initiative is part of an ongoing effort to counteract learning or reading skill loss during the summer months—known as the "summer slide”—and instead encourage students to use this time as an opportunity to make a “summer leap” in literacy skills. According to research, it is estimated that the summer slide accounts for as much as 85% of the reading achievement gap between lower-income students and their middle- and upper-income peers.
