Assistant Athletic Director - Michael Barrera Assistant Athletic Director

Mike R. Barrera was appointed Assistant Athletic Director for the San Antonio Independent School District in August 2018.

Mike is a proud Class of 1996 graduate from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio, Texas. He went on to Texas A&M University Kingsville as a Student Athletic Trainer and received a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology in 2001 and then received his Master of Science in Education Administration from Texas A&M University Kingsville in 2011. He is a Licensed Athletic Trainer, a Certified Texas Teacher, and has a Principalship Certification.

Mike has 15 years of experience in public education and in higher
education. He started Athletic Training programs at Lyndon B. Johnson HS (Laredo, Texas), Carrizo Springs HS, and Falfurrias HS and then went on to Southwest HS as an Athletic Trainer and later became an Assistant Principal at Southwest HS, West Oso HS, and at North East ISD. He was also a Director at Texas State University. His most recent position was Head Athletic Trainer at Highlands HS until his promotion to Assistant Athletic Director in August, 2018.

Mike served as an Athletic Trainer at the 2001 NCAA Division I Hula Bowl in Maui, HI, the NCAA Division II Valero Cactus Bowl in 2000-2002 and in 2007-2009 in Kingsville TX, the 2007 THSBCA Lone Star Classic in College Station, TX, the 2007 THSBCA Sun Belt Classic in Norman, OK, and was selected as the THSBCA South All-Star Trainer in 2008.

Mike will be overseeing the San Antonio Independent School District Academy Sports League for 21 Academy schools and will be supervising 12 SAISD Licensed Athletic Trainers

He is married to Angelica M. Barrera, and they have two children, Mia and Christian. Mike enjoys watching sports, fishing, golfing, and barbequing.
