Aug. 8-12 — Summer Leadership Camp
8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Young Women’s Leadership Academy, 2123 W. Huisache Ave.
Representatives from Girls Inc. of SA will provide leadership training for incoming 6th-graders at San Antonio’s only all-girls public school.

Aug. 9 (Tues) — Back-to-school launch party
4 to 6:30 p.m. at Lanier High School, 1514 W. César E. Chávez Blvd.
New and returning students and their families are invited to get a jump start on the new school year by meeting Lanier staff and community resource representatives. Students can learn about clubs and organizations they might want to join, get free basic haircuts and pick up backpacks. The launch party also will include refreshments, health screenings and door prizes.
Aug. 10 (Wed) — Breakfast courtesy an SAISD alum
8:30 to 8:45 a.m. at Irving Middle School, 1300 Delgado St.
As an expression of appreciation for his former school, Martin Tirado will come bearing 160 breakfast tacos and five gallons each of regular and decaf coffee to brighten the day for Irving staff. On Aug. 17 students will be the beneficiaries of his gratitude when he will bring backpacks to help them get the 2016-17 school year off to a great start. Tirado, a San Antonio realtor, attended Irving in the early 2000s and is a Fox Tech High School graduate.
Aug. 10 (Wed) — Citywide 2016 Fit Family Challenge
5:45 p.m. at Whittier Middle School, 2101 Edison Drive
Whittier is one of the city’s eight host sites for this sixth-annual, 12-week program featuring fun fitness activities aimed at motivating families to break away from a sedentary lifestyle. The 2016 Fit Family Challenge is presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas and organized by San Antonio Sports
Aug. 13 (Sat) — San Antonio Food Bank Farmer’s Market and back-to-school welcome celebration
10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Wheatley Middle School, 415 Gabriel St.
In addition to shopping for fresh fruits and veggies and enjoying food samples at this monthly market, parents of registered SAISD students can pick up school supplies and learn about resources available to them as part of the Wheatley Community School. The market is one of two held monthly at an SAISD East Side campus. The markets are offered in collaboration with the San Antonio Food Bank, SAISD and the Eastside Promise Neighborhood. The host campuses are among a half dozen EPN schools in an area supported through Promise Zone and other federal grants.
