Pre Advanced Placement is based on the premise that all students can perform well at rigorous academic levels. Curriculum and instruction are designed so that students are consistently being challenged to expand their knowledge and skills to the next level. Students are prepared for higher intellectual engagement by starting the development of skills and acquisition of knowledge as early as possible. Addressed effectively, the middle and high school years can provide a powerful opportunity to help all students acquire the knowledge, concepts, and skills needed to engage in a higher level of learning.

- Presents subject matter in greater depth and detail using enrichment and acceleration strategies.
- Instills the habits of mind expected of college-bound students which include:

San Antonio ISD uses SpringBoard, which is the College Board's official Pre-AP program in English language arts for grades 6 – 10. SpringBoard is based on the belief that every student deserves access to rigorous coursework that leads to success in AP and college. Written by teachers for teachers and aligned to the standards, SpringBoard integrates high-quality professional development for teachers and administrators with formative assessments and rigorous instructional materials to offer a complete college readiness solution.
San Antonio ISD also uses the Laying the Foundation Program developed by the National Math and Science Initiative. This program offers course support in math, science and English. Each discipline has its own program structure and a unique 12-module program.
In mathematics, teachers use graphing calculators, manipulatives, and collaborative activities to deepen knowledge, make connections across grade levels, and integrate math with real world situations. Science classes are laboratory based with a focus on building conceptual understanding including strategies for building skills in science literacy and the application of mathematics in science. English includes hands-on collaborative activities that engage with texts with a focus on strategies for developing critical reading, writing, and thinking.
