Equipped with their green thumbs, 3rd-graders and teachers will assemble the school’s three gardens on Wednesday, filling them with soil and seeds for the launch of LEARN, GROW, EAT and GO! -- an interdisciplinary program offered through the Junior Master Gardener and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

Students will be taught a wide variety of lessons through the program, which uses gardening as a tool for lessons in the core academic subjects, as well as in nutrition and interpersonal skills. The physical activity involved in gardening also will provide the students a fun form of exercise.

The inaugural planting will be broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and fall marigolds. Through the first week in October, students also will add other seasonal vegetables and flowers including boy choy, carrots, cilantro, Italian chard, lettuce, onions and petunias. The program includes a weekly healthy recipe that a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service representative will demonstrate for the students and serve up samples of the finished product. Students may take the recipe and produce from the garden home to share with their families.

Families also will have opportunities to help tend to the gardens.
