San Antonio ISD is joining the effort to increase the number of people who can exercise their right to vote by participating in National Voter Registration Day.
On Tuesday, SAISD high school students who are eligible to register will have the opportunity through their government, economics or social studies classes. Along with the high school principals who serve as Deputy Registrars, most SAISD high school librarians recently became deputized to serve as volunteer voter registrars.
The District will also partner with organizations to provide parents and community members the opportunity to register to vote at most of SAISD’s elementary, academies and middle schools. The organizations to provide volunteers at the schools include: GOTV Volunteers, League of Women Voters, Southwest Voter Registration Education Project, LULAC, AARP, COPS/Metro Alliance, NAACP, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Our Lady of the Lake University and other nonpartisan organizations.
Interested community members can find a list of participating schools on the District’s website: www.saisd.net
According to the National Voter Registration Day website, in 2008, 6 million Americans didn’t vote because they missed a registration deadline or didn’t know how to register. While local volunteers assist SAISD community members in registering on Tuesday, across the nation “volunteers, celebrities, and organizations from all over the country will ‘hit the streets’ for National Voter Registration Day. This single day of coordinated field, technology and media efforts will create pervasive awareness of voter registration opportunities–allowing us to reach tens of thousands of voters who we could not reach otherwise.”
