Sept. 27 (Tues) — SAISD to observe National Voter Registration Day
Times and schools that the media may visit are listed below.
In partnership with a variety of organizations, SAISD is joining the National Voter Registration Day effort. On Tuesday, eligible high school students will have the opportunity to register through their government, economics or social studies classes. Parents and community members also may register at the approximately 70 SAISD participating schools (listed on www.saisd.net) Media may visit:
● Hawthorne Academy, 115 W. Josephine St., 8 to 11 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m.
● Davis Middle School, 4702 E. Houston St., 8 to 11 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m.
● Edison High School, 701 Santa Monica, 9:45 a.m. and 1:35 p.m.
Sept. 27 and 28 — Bond and Tax Ratification elections community meetings

These are among eight community meetings to provide the public information and opportunities to ask questions about SAISD’s Nov. 8 Bond and Tax Ratification proposals. Presenters will be Superintendent Pedro Martinez and the School Board member who represents the host site’s Trustee district. Up for voter consideration are a $450 million bond to fund extensive renovations at 13 schools and a TRE, which would assist the District in creating 21st-century classrooms Districtwide and expanded learning opportunities outside the normal school day. Next week’s meetings will be:
● Sept. 27 (Tues) – at Sam Houston High School, 4635 E. Houston St.
● Sept. 28 (Wed) – at Brackenridge High School, 400 Eagleland Drive
Sept. 29 (Thurs) — Sixth-Annual INSPIRE Awards
6 p.m. at the Henry B. Gonzalez Center, 900 E. Market St.
Again this year, District patrons can enjoy an evening of inspiring company and student entertainment while contributing to enriched educational opportunities for SAISD students. To be honored will be past and present District shining stars comprising alumni and educators who are making a significant difference in education and for their ability to inspire others. Outstanding SAISD alumni to be recognized, their categories and schools are: Leadership, Lionel Sosa, artist and nationally recognized in the field of advertising - Lanier HS; Excellence, Dr. William E. Moerner, 2014 Nobel Prize winner in chemistry and Stanford University professor - Jefferson HS; Service, Dr. Jaime Garza, a triple board certified plastic surgeon and Texas State University System Board of Regents chairman - Jefferson HS. SAISD educators will be lauded in the Innovation category. This sixth-annual event is sponsored by the SAISD Foundation, with proceeds supporting the organization's role in funding teacher grants and enrichment opportunities to benefit students.
Sept. 29 (Thurs) — University of Chicago information session
6 to 8 p.m. at the Young Women’s Leadership Academy, 2123 W. Huisache Ave.
All SAISD parents, students and counselors are invited to learn about the admissions process for this top tier university.
Sept. 26-29 — Free family fitness classes
5:30 p.m. at the SAISD schools listed below.
The popular Zumba dance fitness program classes are free and offered in partnership with Health Collaborative, a local network of citizens, community organizations and businesses. Upcoming sessions will be:
