SAISD is creating more opportunities for students to become fluent in both English and Spanish. In August of 2017, the Twain Dual Language Academy will open for pre-kinder to 2nd-graders, expanding to grade 8 in subsequent years.

The academy is part of SAISD’s plans to expand dual-language offerings for students. The District currently has dual-language programs at Bonham Academy and Herff Elementary School.

This fall, an advisory committee was formed comprising SAISD educators, university representatives, parents and community members, with the goal of bringing in more District schools over the next few years to offer full bilingual/dual-language education programs. Plans also call for expanded opportunities for students to become fluent in English and Spanish at all other SAISD campuses.

Assisting SAISD in the program development are local and national experts in the field of bilingual and dual language education, including the internationally renowned Dr. Kathy Escamilla, who will be the event’s keynote speaker. The University of Colorado Boulder’s professor of education’s research includes issues related to Spanish-speaking emerging bilingual students, especially at the elementary school level.

The Twain Dual Language Academy will be open to students across Bexar Country, with first priority given to those within the Twain attendance boundaries.

In preparation for the new academy, Twain is phasing out its middle school, with the remaining Twain students graduating from the 8th grade next school year.  All new students for 2017-18 will be those in Pre-K, Kinder, 1st and 2nd grades.
