What:         500+ SAISD parents to gather for Parent Summit, focused on academics, college readiness

Where:       Historic Sunset Station, 1174 E. Commerce St.

Excellent Parents + Excellent Schools = Excellent Students” is the theme of this conference, which is expected to draw more than 500 parents as partners in SAISD’s efforts to redefine excellence for all students.

*NOTE: This event is not open to the public; parents have signed up in advance to attend.

Superintendent Pedro Martinez will provide the keynote address starting at 9:15 a.m., followed by a variety of choices for break-out sessions. 

The Parent Summit is part of SAISD’s on-going efforts to strengthen family-school partnerships and build parent capacity to help increase student achievement toward college and career success. The summit will provide parents interactive, informative and engaging opportunities to learn relevant strategies to support their children for academic success. 

Parents will have an opportunity to stop by exhibitor booths to include a number of SAISD departments that provide student services; Family Service Association; City of San Antonio; Communities in Schools; Texas A&M University-San Antonio; UTSA; San Antonio College; BiblioTech; Susan G. Komen Foundation and Scholastic.

Sessions include:

§  Connecting the Classroom with Home through Goal Setting (Depot 1, 10:05 – 10:55 a.m.)

Laura Servin, an SAISD Consulting Teacher and 2016 national Milken Educator Award winner, will discuss effective ways to help students succeed academically through goal setting. Here, parents will learn how to create goals that support their children’s individual needs at their schools. Parents will collaborate with other parents and set attainable goals.

§  Brain by Brain: Supporting Gifted and High Achieving Students (Depot 4, 10:05-10:55 a.m.)

Christine Williamson and Liz Ozuna from SAISD Advanced Academics will help parents explore ways for parents to engage their student in higher level critical and creative thinking.

§  Bullying: Let’s Talk About It (Depot 4B, 11 – 11:50 a.m.)

Victoria Bustos, SAISD Student Support, and Ignacio Valdez, SAISD Special Education, will present a session on bully prevention. Participants with learn eight keys that can help schools eliminate bullying. This session will also discuss the Stop, Walk, and Talk response to bullying behaviors.

§  Grit, Goals and Games: Your Child’s Path to Mathematics’ Success (Depot 3, 11:55 – 12:45)

SAISD’s Professional Learning team will present an engaging session on how parents can support their student for success in Mathematics. The session will cover growth mindsets, goal setting and game strategies to develop confident mathematicians. 

The summit’s goal is to provide parents with information that will help them in making informed decisions about their child’s education and empower them to take an active role in the education process.
