SAISD will hold its annual Magnets & Specialized Schools Fair on the evening of Nov. 2. Along with career-specific magnets, the District offers a variety of specialized schools, and applications are being taken now for students entering 9th or 6th grade next year, as well as kindergarten, pre-kindergarten and other grades.

The application period for these magnets and specialized schools is Nov. 1, 2016-Jan. 31, 2017* for the 2017-18 school year.

SAISD magnet programs are a fast-track to college and career, giving students the opportunity to earn up to 45 hours of college credit by graduation while, in most cases, being introduced to a high-demand career. The District’s magnet programs are tightly aligned to Alamo Colleges’ programs and are offered at eight SAISD high schools. Students earn the college credit through a mix of free dual-credit courses and Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate credit by exam.

SAISD has 19 specialized schools, across different grade levels, with diverse areas of focus and innovative methods of instruction. Specialized schools’ offerings include early college high schools, dual-language academies, an advanced learning academy for highly motivated students, and all-girls and all-boys schools.

With a few exceptions, our specialized schools are those where all students at the school, not just a group of students, are a part of the program and receive specialized instruction. Some of these schools operate under non-traditional grade configurations, such as PK-8, PK-12, 4-8 and 6-12.
