Jan. 14 (Sat) — Martin Luther King Jr. 21st Annual Memorial Chess Tournament
10:30 a.m. (round one) at Mission Academy, 9210 S. Presa St.
Approximately 100 game-board enthusiasts of all grades and levels of chess proficiency from throughout South Texas and beyond are expected to compete. This annual chess tournament is an official MLK week event.

Jan. 15 (Sun) — SAISD’s YMLA to host MLK 5K Run/Walk
9 a.m. at Martin Luther King Park, 3503 M.L. King Drive
Proceeds will benefit the Young Men’s Leadership Academy, San Antonio’s only all-boys public school. The 5K Run/Walk is an official MLK week event.

Jan. 16 (Mon) — Martin Luther King Jr. Day
All schools and most offices will be closed.

Jan. 17 (Tues) — Snow Slide Day* - RESCHEDULED FOR MONDAY, JAN. 23.
8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Stewart Elementary, 1950 Rigsby Ave.
The more than 500 students whose attendance has been at least 96 percent since the first day of school will be treated to the fun of taking a ride down a snow slide. *In case of inclement weather, the date
of this event might be rescheduled.

Jan. 17 (Tues) — School Board recognition reception and meeting
5 p.m. at the Burnet Center, 406 Barrera St.
The contributions of SAISD’s hard-working and dedicated Trustees will be honored during a reception celebrating Texas School Board Recognition Month. The regularly scheduled monthly meeting will follow.

Jan. 18 (Wed) — First day to file for May 6 election
8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at SAISD’s Governmental & Community Relations Department at the Gonzales Center, 518 E. Magnolia Ave.
Qualified SAISD residents interested in serving as a Trustee for Single-Member District 1, 3, 4 or 7 may file their applications for a place on the ballot. Candidate information packets also will be available. There is no filing fee and individuals must reside in the single-member district for which they file. The last day to file will be Feb. 17.

Jan. 18 (Wed) — SAISD band to perform for  ‘Big Give 2017’ kickoff
8:30 to 9 a.m. (event runs 9 to 11 a.m.) at the Whitley Theological Center, 285 Oblate Drive
The Sam Houston High School Hurricane band has been invited to perform for this event, which is in anticipation of the May 4 Big Give. On that day, nonprofit organizations will take part in a 24-hour online fundraising blitz. Included in the Big Give are Bexar and 13 additional South Texas counties. Big Give 2017 is powered by the Nonprofit Council, the San Antonio Area Foundation and the New Braunfels Area Community Foundation.

Jan. 21 (Sat) — SAISD EPIC Saturday
8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at Edison High School, 701 Santa Monica
Keynote speaker will be Dr. Shawn Smith, president and founding partner of Modern Teacher, whose presentation will be based on his book “Teacher as Architect.” This will be the fourth of five EPIC Saturdays to run through February. Each provides SAISD teachers conference-style events featuring keynote addresses by some of the nation’s best education minds and breakout sessions that deliver tailored learning.

Free family fitness classes resume for the New Year
Jan. 17-19 — 5:30 p.m. at the SAISD schools listed below.
The popular Zumba dance fitness program classes are free and offered in partnership with Health Collaborative, a local network of citizens, community organizations and businesses. Upcoming sessions will be:

● Jan. 17 (Tues) – at Jefferson High School, 723 Donaldson Ave.
● Jan. 18 (Wed) – at Whittier Middle School, 2101 Edison Drive
● Jan. 19 (Thurs) – at Herff Elementary, 996 S. Hackberry St.
● Jan. 19 (Thurs) – at Tafolla Middle School, 1303 W. César E. Chávez Blvd.
