Feb. 18 (Sat) — SAISD EPIC Saturday
8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at Edison High School, 701 Santa Monica
Keynote speaker will be the nationally acclaimed educator Dr. Doug Fisher, who will address the role of the teacher/student relationship, the importance of teacher clarity of the learning target and planning challenging tasks. This will be the final of five EPIC Saturdays that debuted last fall to provide SAISD teachers daylong conference-style events featuring keynote addresses by some of the nation’s best education minds and breakout sessions that deliver tailored learning.
Feb.18 (Sat) — ‘How to Get Life & Career Success by Understanding the Power of You’ talk
11 a.m. to noon at the Wheatley Community School, 415 Gabriel St.
In partnership with the Star Force in Community Schools, the Wheatley Educational Opportunity Center will host this talk for Eastside Promise Neighborhood residents. The host site is among a half dozen EPN schools in an area supported through Promise Zone and other federal grants.
Feb.18 and 25 — SAISD ‘F.A.C.E. of Success’ resource community fairs
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the locations listed below
Community partners from more than 50 organizations and service providers will be on-site to offer children’s activities, program information and lead hands-on workshops on a variety of topics to include college and career awareness, community and leadership awareness, financial literacy, leading healthy and active lives and more. Families will be able to enjoy arts and crafts, face painting, balloon animals and live entertainment. They also will be able to take advantage of health screenings, ID kits for children and children’s safety demonstrations. These fairs, being called the “F.A.C.E. of Success,” will be the first of six events for the SAISD Family and Community Enrichment Resource Program hosted by the District’s Department of Adult & Community Education. Upcoming dates and locations will be:
● Feb. 18 (Sat) – at the former Brewer Elementary site, 906 Merida St.
● Feb. 25 (Sat) – at the Wheatley Community School, 415 Gabriel St.
Feb. 20 (Mon) — Presidents Day holiday
All SAISD schools and most offices will be closed.
Feb. 21 (Tues) — School Board meeting B
5:30 p.m. at the Burnet Center, 406 Barrera St.
Feb. 22 (Wed) — SAISD State of the District
7:30 a.m. check-in. Program from 8 to 9 a.m. at the Mays Family Center at the Witte Museum, 3801 Broadway St.
Superintendent Pedro Martinez will deliver his second State of the District address to the business community to provide an update on the bold, strategic plan he presented last year, and speak to new innovative plans for 2017-18 as we continue to work to make SAISD a model urban school district for the country. The business community plays a critical role in these strategies as we help redefine excellence and ensure SAISD students are prepared for the workforce needs of today and tomorrow. The event is put on in partnership with the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the SAISD Foundation.
Feb. 22 and 27 — CAST Tech information sessions
6:30 p.m. at CAST Tech High School (Fox Tech campus), 637 N. Main Ave.
Interested incoming 9th-graders and their parents are invited to find out more about this specialized school to focus on preparing students for careers in technology and business and entrepreneurism and more. CAST Tech, located in San Antonio’s Tech District, is set to open in August to students from throughout Bexar County.
Free family fitness classes
Feb. 21-23 — 5:30 p.m. at the SAISD schools listed below.
The popular Zumba dance fitness program classes are free and offered in partnership with Health Collaborative, a local network of citizens, community organizations and businesses. Upcoming sessions will be:
