SAISD Board appoints Christina Martinez to fill Board vacancy for District 6
March 27, 2017 -- The San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) Board of Trustees voted unanimously tonight to appoint Christina Martinez to fill the vacancy for the District 6 Trustee.
Martinez, vice president of external relations with Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas, will fill the vacancy created when Olga Hernandez resigned Feb. 21, 2017. She is a life-long resident of SAISD and parent of two SAISD students. She has worked in nonprofit organizations for more than 10 years, including Youth Literacy and Girl Scouts, supporting partnerships with the District.
“The deliberation was a challenge due to the high quality of the candidates,” said Board President Patti Radle. “With such extensively strong leadership in the District as demonstrated tonight, District 6 is in a position to forge ahead with the strength of this very dedicated community.”
The action followed two rounds of interviews with applicants this evening. Two of the seven applicants withdrew from consideration this evening, expressing their support for other candidates. The first round included interviews with each of the five remaining applicants. The Board then selected four candidates for a second round of more in-depth interviews prior to making their decision.
Martinez will serve the unexpired term that runs until May 2019, when elections will be held. She will be officially sworn-in at the next regular Board business meeting, April 10, 2017.
Each SAISD trustee represents one of seven single-member districts and is elected by voters of that district. Trustees serve four-year terms.
District 6 includes Edison High School, Twain and Whittier middle schools, Advanced Learning Academy (Euclid campus) and the elementary schools Arnold, Beacon Hill, Cotton, Franklin, Neal, Rogers and Wilson.
