April 28 (Fri) — Battle of Flowers Parade Day
All District schools and most offices will be closed.
May 1 (Mon) — Annual Golf Fore Excellence Tournament
1 p.m. (shot gun start) at the Brackenridge Park Golf Course, 2315 Avenue B
Local businesses and community supporters will hit the greens for a good cause. A dinner celebration will conclude the day’s festivities. Lead sponsors are Waste Management and Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas. All proceeds will go to the SAISD Foundation to support their innovative grants programs kicking off later this month.
May 1 (Mon) — Reception celebration
5 to 7 p.m. at Highlands High School, 3118 Elgin
The community is invited to celebrate $65 million in campus renovations at this Southeast Side high school.
May 4 (Thurs) — Transformations Art Showcase reception
5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Alamo Convocation Center, 110 Tuleta Drive
Art enthusiasts can view creations representing a variety of mediums crafted by students from all grade levels. An awards ceremony is set for 6 p.m. Each spring this event is held to promote the value of an art education in developing higher-order thinking, cultural awareness and creativity. The showcase will remain on display through May 11.
May 4 (Thurs) — Saving our Sons: A Community Conversation
6:30 to 8 p.m. at Wheatley Middle School, 415 Gabriel St.
This event featuring author and single-gender education advocate Dr. Michael Gurian is presented by SAISD’s Young Men’s Leadership Academy, which will move to the Wheatley campus this fall. In his keynote address, Gurian will speak on the ways teachers, administrators, parents and community members can gather to support and bolster youth as they progress through the most formative years of their development. YMLA students, their families and community members are invited to attend.
Free family fitness classes
April May 1-4 — 5:30 p.m. at the SAISD schools listed below.
The popular Zumba dance fitness program classes are free and offered in partnership with Health Collaborative, a local network of citizens, community organizations and businesses. Upcoming sessions will be:

● May 2 Tues) – at Jefferson High School, 723 Donaldson Ave.
● May 3 (Wed) – at Whittier Middle School, 2101 Edison Drive
