May 6 (Sat) — SAISD ‘F.A.C.E. of Success’ Summer Family Fun Fair
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Wheatley Community School, 415 Gabriel St.
The community is invited to enjoy activities including arts and crafts, a children’s workshop, gardening and an egg hunt. There also will be raffles for prizes. This fair is part of a series of events for the SAISD Family and Community Enrichment Resource Program, called the F.A.C.E. of Success, hosted by the District’s Department of Adult & Community Education.
May 8 (Mon) — School Board Business Meeting A
5:30 p.m. at the Burnet Center, 406 Barrera St.
May 9 and 11 — Fifth-annual Sidney Lanier Poetry Festival
Times below, at Lanier High School, 1514 W. César E. Chávez Blvd.
Each spring, this landmark West Side campus honors its namesake by hosting events celebrating the 19th-century poet’s favorite literary genre. Featured activities will be:
• May 9 (Tues) – 9 to 11 a.m. Senior citizens from the Good Samaritan Center will visit the school to paint original works of art based on the students’ poetry.
• May 11 (Thurs) – 2:40 to 4:15 p.m. and 6:30 to 8 p.m. The afternoon’s event will be a student poetry slam with professional poets and community members serving as guest judges. Hosting the slam will be local poet Christopher “Rooster” Martinez. An open mic will highlight the evening. Joining in this celebration will be guest speakers and poets from the community.
May 10 (Wed) — A Taste of SAISD Salsa Cook-off
11 a.m. to noon at the Cooper Learning Center, 1700 Tampico St.
Teams comprising about 30 culinary arts and nutrition program students representing four District high schools will prepare salsas to be considered for serving in campus cafeterias next school year. The winning recipe also will become event sponsor, the SAISD Child Nutrition Department’s, official salsa. Each team will use its own recipe for a traditional salsa with a spice and heat level appropriate for students in grades kinder-12.
May 11 (Thurs) — Innovative Grants awards announcement
10 a.m. at the Advanced Learning Academy, 621 W. Euclid Avenue
District educators will be awarded grants by the SAISD Foundation to fund innovative projects to be implemented this fall. The amount, the largest to date, will be disclosed nearer the date of the awards announcement.
May 11 (Thurs) — Annual White Rose Induction ceremony
6 p.m. at Jefferson High School, 723 Donaldson Ave.
Members of the class of 2023 will be welcomed into the Young Women’s Leadership Academy by accepting a white rose as their names are called. The ceremony is in honor of their selection as incoming 6th-graders this fall at San Antonio’s only all-girls public school.
May 12 (Fri) — Decorate a Cake for Mom Day
Times and locations listed below.
Assisted by a professional baker from H-E-B, students will personally adorn a cake for their moms in preparation of Mother’s Day on May 14. Times and participating schools are:
• 8 to 10 a.m. at Stewart Elementary, 1950 Rigsby Ave.
• 8:30 to 10 a.m. at Crockett Elementary, 2215 Morales St.
