COMING ATTRACTIONS

Dec. 5 (Sat) — ‘Changing Faces Moving Places’ symposium
8 to 11:45 a.m. at the University of Texas at San Antonio, 1 UTSA Circle
SAISD’s Rhodes Middle School choir and band will provide entertainment during the registration and breakfast portion of the event, while District 7 School Board member and former mayor Ed Garza will be the final speaker. The symposium is presented by the 2009 Superintendents Cohort.

Dec. 8 (Tue) — SAISD Academic Decathlon district scrimmage
9:45 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at UTSA Downtown Campus Buena Vista Theater, 501 W. Durango
Students from the District’s eight traditional high schools will compete in art, economics, language/literature, mathematics, music, science, written super quiz and super quiz relay. This event - in preparation of the upcoming regional Academic Decathlon at which all will compete – is held in conjunction with the UTSA Office of P-20 Initiatives, a partnership between educational institutions, and business, industry and community organizations.

Dec. 8 (Tue) — New teacher grants presentation
4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Johnson Center, 1811 S. Laredo St
The San Antonio Foundation for Excellence in Education will present $250 gift cards totaling $31,250 through the foundation’s grant program and sponsor State Farm Insurance.

Dec. 8 (Tue) — School Board meeting
5:30 p.m. at SAISD Central Office, 141 Lavaca St.

Dec. 9 (Wed) — Magnet School Fair
5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Alamo Convocation Center, 110 Tuleta St.
Fifth- and 8th-graders from throughout Bexar County are invited to learn about educational options offered through the District’s nine high school and the four middle school Magnet programs, as well as the all-girls college prep Young Women’s Leadership Academy.

Dec. 9 (Wed) — Lady Bearcats to attend Sandra Cisneros appearance
6 to 8 p.m. at the new Twig Bookstore, Suite 124 at the Pearl, 200 E Grayson St.
Wearing specially-designed T-shirts for the occasion, literature-loving Twain Middle School girls will receive signed copies of the San Antonio author’s coming-of-age novel “House on Mango Street.”

Dec. 9 (Wed) — TAKS Skills Night
6 p.m. at Herff Elementary, 996 S. Hackberry St.
Parents will learn ways they can help their children do well on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge Skills exam.

Dec. 11 (Fri) — AVID EXPO
6 to 8 p.m. at Jefferson High School Cafeteria, 723 Donaldson Ave
SAISD middle and high school students and their parents will test their knowledge of the Advancement Through Individual Determination program by competing in a contest formatted like the popular game show “Jeopardy.”

Dec. 12 (Sat) — Eighth annual ‘Visit with Santa’
9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. at the SAISD Police Department, 1702 N. Alamo St.
Again this year St. Nick will make an early Alamo City appearance especially for approximately 300 pre-selected SAISD kinder to 5th-graders. Youngsters will arrive throughout the day to meet and be photographed with the jolly old elf, receive gifts and enjoy refreshments. The majority of Santa’s stash for his annual special guest appearance was provided by toy drives at the District’s middle and high school campuses facilitated by event sponsor, the SAISD Police Department.

Mark your calendars for some of the other events of which we are aware scheduled for the next week.

Dec. 15 (Tue) — The 15th-annual La Tamalada
8:45 to 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at De Zavala Elementary School, 2311 San Luis St.
Each year the making and eating of tamales provides bilingual program kinder through 5th-graders and their parents a tasty culmination to lessons on how mathematics and science are important in cooking. Corn husks will be filled with masa and meat that morning for cooking, and the finished product enjoyed during an afternoon party.

Dec. 15 (Tue) – ‘A Night Under the Stars’
6 p.m. at Herff School Elementary, 996 S. Hackberry St
Entertainment for this nocturnal feast will be provided by some of the brightest stars in the universe. The stargazing - held in conjunction with the school’s Family Dinner Night – is sponsored by the Presa Community Center and the San Antonio Astronomical Society.

Dec. 17 (Thurs) — Production of Handel’s Messiah
7 p.m. at Jefferson High School, 723 Donaldson Ave.
Performers comprising five SAISD high school choirs will present this traditional holiday choral masterpiece. Conductor will be Jefferson Fine Arts Magnet Academy choir director Ronnie Sanders. The concert is free and open to the public.

Dec. 18 (Fri) — Mayoral visit
2 p.m. at Rhodes Middle School, 3000 Tampico St
Julián Castro will speak to students about the importance of education.

Dec.19 (Sat) — The Met: HD Live in Schools program
Noon at the Regal Fiesta 16 Stadium Theatre, 12631 Vance Jackson Ave.
Jacques Offenbach’ “Les contes d'Hoffmann,” based on three short stories by German horror and fantasy author E. T. A. Hoffmann, will be the second of two live opera broadcasts that select District middle school choir students and their directors will see this semester. Again this year SAISD has been chosen among school districts nationwide for this program providing opportunities to experience New York’s Metropolitan Opera performances beamed directly from the Lincoln Center. Participation is part of a comprehensive fine arts lesson including vocals, music, history, set design, costuming and theater.
