Aug. 21 (Mon) — ‘The Great American Eclipse’ learning adventure
11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Harris Middle School, 325 Pruitt Ave.
Lessons in the sun, moon and Earth relationship will come alive for 8th-grade science students at this in-district charter specializing in science and technology when they will have the opportunity to view the much-anticipated solar eclipse. To prepare for this epic event, students will wear approved solar filter glasses and will see the sun’s reflection through pinhole viewers they made for the occasion. As a precaution, viewing lessons have included the importance of eye safety.

Aug. 26 (Sat) — SAISD Athletic Hall of Fame
4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Alamo Convocation Center, 110 Tuleta Drive
Seven outstanding athletes and educators representing the District’s rich and illustrious past will be inducted into the SAISD Athletic Hall of Fame’s class of 2017. In addition to outstanding athleticism, inductees were chosen for their distinction and excellence to SAISD by their conduct both on and off the field, or court, of competition. They are: Gary Bell, former baseball pitcher who played in four World Series games - Burbank HS class of 1954; Vic Castillo, state champ quarterback and retired SAISD administrator, coach and teacher - Brackenridge HS class of 1963; Laura Neugebauer Groff, UTSA head volleyball coach and 2015 Conference USA Coach of the Year – Jefferson HS class of 1982; Phil Harris, former New York Giant and a 1963 national champ with UT-Austin - Jefferson HS class of 1962; Joel Horlen, former baseball pitcher who played in the 1972 World Series for the Oakland A’s - Burbank HS class of 1955; Howard “H.J.” Johnston, a 1968 and ’72 U.S. Modern Pentathlon Olympics coach who retired as an SAISD assistant athletic director; and Willie Mitchell, former NFL football player and Super Bowl champ with the Kansas City Chiefs - Wheatley HS class of 1959.
