SAISD’s more inclusive non-discrimination policies
In keeping with SAISD’s commitment to ensuring that all persons are treated with dignity, respect and protected from being bullied, our School Board on Aug. 21 approved revisions to the District’s non-discrimination policies to include the words sexual orientation and gender identity and expression.
This more inclusive policy ensures that all students and employees know they are valued and have the right to a learning and work environment free from discrimination, harassment and retaliation.
While SAISD’s policy follows suit with those adopted by other Texas urban school districts, including Austin, Dallas, El Paso and Houston, it was adopted following the request of a student.
This student showed tenacity in bringing this to the attention of other students, District administration, board members, and others in the community. We respect her leadership and compassion exemplified by her advocacy of non-discrimination for all.
The policies will soon be available online. Below is the revised non-discrimination statement.
It is the policy of San Antonio ISD not to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation or disability in its vocational programs, services or activities as required by Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended; Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972; Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, and SAISD's board policies DIA, FFH, and FFI.
