Coming August 2018 for PK-2 grades
Applications open Nov. 27

In August 2018, SAISD will open the Washington Irving Dual Language Academy, providing students the opportunity to speak fluently in both English and Spanish and develop higher cognitive and academic skills in both languages.

SAISD developed the program with the help of local and national experts in the field of dual-language education. This will be the District’s second campuswide dual-language school.

The campus will initially serve pre-kinder through 1st grade, increasing to 8th grade by adding one grade each subsequent year.

In preparation for the new academy, Irving is phasing out its middle school, with the remaining students graduating from the 8th grade next school year.

Accepting applications

Irving Academy is accepting applications Nov. 27-Jan. 31 for students entering pre-kinder, kinder, 1st and 2nd grades for the 2018-19 school year.

Applications will be available at www.saisd.net/enroll. Paper applications will be available upon request.

As an in-district charter, the school will be open to students across Bexar County, with first priority for those within Irving’s attendance boundaries.

Students who do not qualify for free pre-kinder are eligible to enroll in the tuition-supported pre-kinder program.

Applications submitted after Jan. 31, 2018 will be added to the respective waitlists. Applicants from the waitlist are admitted on a first-come-first-served basis depending on seat availability. Families that applied before the deadline will be notified of their status beginning the week of Feb. 20th. Waitlist notifications will begin in April.

Cognitive benefits of the dual-language model

Irving Academy will be a 100 percent dual-language school, where dual language is not just a program,  but embedded into the educational model in every classroom and subject area. The academy is part of SAISD’s plans to increase dual-language offerings for students.

One of the benefits of dual language is integration. Traditional bilingual programs tend to segregate English-language learners from native English speakers. The dual-language school’s teaching model will put native students from each language into the same classrooms to learn together.

Research supports the cognitive benefits children receive when they learn to read and write at grade level in both their native language and in English. When students participating in dual-language programs have been followed across time, the research has shown they score as high (or higher than) typical native English speakers on difficult, national English reading exams, which tests curricular mastery in all subjects combined.

The academic benefits are there for both the native English speakers and English learners.

The main goal for implementing dual-language programs is to lead SAISD students into forming strong cognitive and academic skills through the development of on-level bilingualism and biliteracy. In addition, students will develop stronger levels of self-esteem, cultural pride and intercultural understanding and collaboration, leading them to possess the cross-cultural competencies necessary for success in our diverse, global society.
