• Maverick Elementary, 107 Raleigh Place (9:30-10:30)
Staff and students will have particular cause for gratitude on “Giving Tuesday” as recipients of $500 Mini-Grants from the SAISD Foundation. They will learn of the gifts during surprise visits to their schools during this international observance in response to the consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. In total, 54 grants will be awarded at eight school on “Giving Tuesday.”
An M.L. King Academy grant will fund “Studio Club: Music with a Mission,” through which students will learn to write, produce, mix and edit music. Their creations will be shared with their classmates, as well as students attending the academy’s feeder elementaries. Two additional grants will also be awarded for a growing family gardening program and math enhancements in the classroom.
Maverick Elementary will receive 12 grants in total. One will be awarded for “Introducing the QBall,” a portable, tossable microphone to amplify student voices and stimulate classroom discussions, while another will fund a greenscreen for the Dragon Network News, the school’s daily broadcast.
“Giving Tuesday” will kick off the presentations of 146 Mini-Grants across 74 campuses through January. This is the largest number of campuses ever to receive this funding for classroom enhancements.
