SAISD students volunteer as tax preparers

Lanier High School students are gaining professional experience through volunteerism this tax season.

More than 20 Lanier business students have earned certification to prepare and file tax returns for taxpayers and are using their talents to benefit the community.

The students became certified through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program – an initiative funded by the United Way. The program’s mission is to assist individuals, who qualify for the program, file their tax returns for free. Qualifying individuals make $60,000 or less, experience disabilities or have limited English-speaking skills.

The students will be volunteering at VITA program sites throughout tax season.
