Nominations Now Being Accepted for 2019 SAISD Athletic Hall of Fame Honorees
SAN ANTONIO, November 14, 2018 – Nominations for the 2019 San Antonio ISD Athletic Hall of Fame are now being accepted. Nominees include former athletes, administrators, coaches, or special contributors.
The SAISD Athletic Hall of Fame will celebrate its 5th year anniversary in 2019. The SAISD Athletic Hall of Fame recognizes alumni who have made a positive impact in sports, either through excellent athletic achievements or excellent athletic program contributions. Inductees are honored at a special induction ceremony each summer. Additionally, a timeless and elegant bronze plaque of each honoree is mounted on permanent display at the Hall of Fame Wall located on the visitor’s side of historic Alamo Stadium.
Since its inception, 29 honorees have been inducted into the SAISD Athletic Hall of Fame. Some of the biggest names in San Antonio sports history are part of this storied group. Headline inductees include names such as Kyle Rote, Tommy Nobis, Warren McVea, Willie Mitchell, Joel Horlen, Gary Bell, Gary Green, Gabe Rivera, Cliff Johnson, Fennis Dembo, Darryl Grant, Delo Dyer, Christi Cano and Laura Neugebauer Groff.
Nominations are selected by a committee. Eligibility requirements for the SAISD Athletic Hall of Fame include:
● Student-athletes who graduated from a SAISD high school at least 15 years ago. Nominees can be considered posthumously.
● Administrators who served at the high school level for a minimum of 20 years or as a high school administrator and coach for a minimum of 15 years, of which at least 10 years must have been as an administrator.
● Coaches who served at the high school level for at least 20 years. Primary consideration was given to their achievements at this level and secondarily to those at the collegiate or professional level.
● Contributors in such areas as sports media, sports medicine, sports official, sports announcer or supporter. Nominees were considered primarily on the merits of their contributions to high school athletics and must have been involved in high school athletics for a minimum of 20 years.
