Briscoe Elementary School achieves International Baccalaureate World School status
SAISD now home to five IB World Schools
Briscoe Elementary School has become authorized to provide the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme, designating it an IB World School. An IB education is acclaimed worldwide because its active and engaging framework prepares students for college, and primes them to excel as lifelong learners in our global society.
“The IB framework supports our drive for academic excellence,” said Superintendent Pedro Martinez. “An IB education is recognized across the world for its innovative approach to education and its philosophy of placing an equal focus on academics and personal development. Students who participate develop a strong set of problem-solving strategies, think critically, and develop knowledge and skills to apply to new situations or tasks, which prepares them for success beyond school.”
Briscoe started the multi-year candidacy process of becoming an IB World School in 2017. Since then, the school has worked with an IB consultant to implement the Primary Years Programme.
In order for a school to offer one or more of the IB programmes of education, it must first be approved as a candidate school by the International Baccalaureate Organization, and then must complete an authorization process. The authorization process varies by school and the IB programme, but typically takes between two and three years.
“The growth of our students over the last two and a half years has been remarkable due to the implementation of the IB framework. IB has encouraged our students to be risk-takers and inquisitive in their learning experiences,” said Principal D’Les Herron. “Communication skills and understanding international mindfulness have flourished because of IB. Our students have developed confidence to ask questions and push their learning to new heights. They have also learned how to advocate for themselves and others and how to reflect on their learning and thinking to improve their own efforts.”
Briscoe is the fifth SAISD school to receive the IB World School status.
SAISD is the only school district in the county to offer an IB education at the elementary, middle and high school levels. It offers the full IB continuum – Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma programmes – in two SAISD high school feeder patterns.
Briscoe joins IB World Schools Burbank High School and Harris Middle School to create a K-12 pathway to an IB education in the Burbank feeder. IB World Schools Jefferson High School and Woodlawn Academy create a K-12 pathway in the Jefferson feeder, with four other SAISD schools in the Jefferson feeder in their candidacy phases: elementary schools Huppertz and Woodlawn Hills, as well as Fenwick Academy and Longfellow Middle School.
SAISD hosts the largest number of IB and IB-candidate schools throughout Bexar County – totaling nine IB campuses, which serve approximately 5,750 students.
