Jan. 30 (Sat) — Clinic by the Heart of Texas band
9 a.m. to noon at Burbank High School, 1002 Edwards St.
As part of their educational outreach efforts, these musicians comprising former and current school band directors, military personnel, and physicians will help students prepare for this spring’s University Interscholastic League competition.
Jan. 31 (Sun) — ‘Dancing with the HoT Band’ concert
3 p.m. at Burbank High School, 1002 Edwards St.
Student musicians will show what they learned at Saturday’s clinic through a “side-by-side” performance of “Serenade and Dances” by James Sudduth with the Heart of Texas band. The concert also will include other performances by the Heart of Texas featuring Texas State University’s internationally-renowned saxophone soloist Todd Oxford.
Feb. 1 (Mon) — ‘PBS’ pep rally
8:30 a.m. at Hillcrest Elementary School, 211 West Malone Ave.
Teacher-created jingles and student presentations will highlight this kickoff for the Positive Behavior Support initiative,a schoolwide endeavor for Hillcrest to be exemplary in every way, including student behavior.
Feb. 2 (Tues) — Gingerbread House presentation
10 to 10:30 a.m. at Navarro Academy, 623 S. Pecos St.
This award-winning confection will be presented as a gift to the landmark school whose architecture inspired its construction. In December the gingerbread house placed third overall and took three of seven places including the People's Choice and the Kids' Choice awards in a contest sponsored by the American Institute of Architect San Antonio, West East Design Group and the San Antonio Children's Museum. All four of the competition participants who represent SAISD’s Department of Construction Management will be present, and a series of poster boards on easels will detail the building process. The subject of inspiration opened in 1886, and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
Feb. 2 (Tues) — Financial Aid Night
6:30 p.m. at Highlands High School, 3118 Elgin Ave.
College-bound students and their parents will receive information on the application process, entrance exams, financial aid and scholarships. Financial Aid Night is sponsored by SAISD’s Office of Student Support in partnership with Project Stay Inc.
Feb. 2-4 — ‘Laying the Foundation’ professional training session
8 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. at Mission Academy, 9210 S. Presa St
SAISD Advanced Placement and Pre-AP English, math and science teachers will learn new ways to teach their students high-level thinking skills as part of rigorous lessons on their respective subjects. The training will focus on hands-on learning, creativity, technology and technical literacy. This is the fourth and final in a series of “Laying the Foundation” sessions for the 2009-10 school year.
Feb. 3 (Wed) — Poster competition awards ceremony
9:30 a.m. at Edison High School, 701 Santa Monica Drive near Blanco Road
The winning Edison Health Professions Magnet students will be presented three monetary awards and two honorable mentions from contest sponsor the University of the Incarnate Word’s Feik School of Pharmacy. Judging was based upon a five-minute presentation on posters created on the topic of health literacy.
Feb. 3 (Wed) — National Signing Day
2 p.m. at Brackenridge High School, 400 Eagleland Drive at South St. Mary’s Street
Set to become a member of the University of Texas at San Antonio’s inaugural football squad is Eagles receiver Earon Homles, while running back Willie Culpepper is considering Miami University of Ohio, Montana State, or the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Feb. 4 (Thurs) — Rodeo roundup day
6:30 to 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. at De Zavala Elementary 2311 San Luis St.
Events in celebration of the annual San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo will start with a cowboy breakfast for staff and faculty hosted by parent volunteers. Heating up the action later that morning will be a chili cookoff in which approximately 10 to 15 faculty and staff members are expected to vie for the honor of champ. Judges invited to sample the spicy concoctions include SAISD School Board Secretary Tom Lopez, representatives from the San Antonio police and fire departments, a Lanier High School culinary arts teacher and a local spice company official.
Feb. 5 (Fri) — SAISD Council of PTAs Founders Day Banquet
6 p.m. at Brackenridge High School, 400 Eagleland Drive at S. St. Mary’s Street
This annual celebration commemorates those who founded the national Parent-Teacher Association.
