Feb. 27 (Sat) —   Family garden and craft day

9 to 11 a.m. at J.T. Brackenridge Elementary School, 1214 Guadalupe St.

Science lessons will literally come to life for students as they create flower and vegetable gardens, and through the resulting fruits of their labors. Assisting them will be their parents and school staff. Materials for the gardens are funded by a San Antonio Excellence in Education grant.  

Feb. 27 (Sat) — Texas Academic Decathlon Super Quiz Relay

Starting at approximately 3:45 p.m. at San Antonio College, 1300 San Pedro Ave.

Teams representing SAISD’s Burbank and Edison high schools will be among 40 statewide competing in the medium-schools category. Students will respond to questions on the Great Depression in the only public event of the two-day Academic Decathlon competition. Winning teams at the state-level will qualify for the national contest.

Feb. 27 (Sat) — San Antonio Golden Gloves Tournament

6 to 11 p.m. at the Alzafar Shrine Temple, 901 N.W. Loop 1604

In the main event will be six-time national champion Adam Lopez, a student at SAISD’s Highlands High School, who will enter the ring with Kaylyn Alfred of Lafayette, La. Adam’s classmates will be offered a special ticket discount. The match also can be viewed March 5 on “San Antonio On Demand,” cable channel 988. 

Feb. 28 (Sun) — Brackenridge students to perform at Dallas Cowboys FanFest

2 p.m. performance. FanFest starts at noon at the San Antonio Events Center, 8111 Meadow Leaf

Among the five featured NFL players making an appearance will be wide receiver and 2002 Brackenridge High School graduate Sam Hurd. In honor of the homecoming, his alma mater’s drumline and the Purple Jackets dance and cheer squads will provide on-stage pep rally entertainment. Brackenridge is the only school selected to participate. Admission to FanFest is free. 

March 1 (Mon) — TAKS pep rally

1:45 to 2:30 p.m. at Rogers Elementary School, 620 McIlvaine St.

The Spurs Coyote will encourage 4th-graders to do their best on the upcoming Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills writing test.  

March 6 (Sat) — Annual plant sale

9 a.m. to noon at Madison Elementary School, 2900 W. Woodlawn Ave.

A variety of student-grown indoor and outdoor plants will be sold. Proceeds will benefit the children’s garden and greenhouse projects.
