April 25 (Sun) - Lanier HS students to take part in SystemsGo rocket launch
Science Research and Design students from SAISD’s Lanier High School will launch VOK1 in culmination of their year-long SystemsGo aeroscience project. They will be among students representing more than 40 participating high schools statewide setting off their rockets at this site near Fredericksburg. Lanier served as the District’s pilot school this year for the SystemsGo curriculum.
April 26 (Mon) — Visit from dignitaries to kickoff presidential letter-writing campaign
9 a.m. at Connell Middle School, 400 Hot Wells at S. New Braunfels Blvd.
District 23 U.S. Rep. Ciro Rodriguez will introduce Mary W. Njoroge, the former director of basic education in Kenya, Africa, who will talk about the importance of youngsters writing letters to elected officials. Following the visit, Connell students will join others from throughout the United States in asking President Barak Obama to fulfill his campaign pledge of $2 billion for a Global Fund for Education, created to improve lives through an international investment in education. After the letters are written, Rodriguez will hand deliver them to the president.
April 26 (Mon) — Leticia Van de Putte to be honored
9:30 a.m. at the Burnet Center, 406 Barrera St.
SAISD and the Equity Center will recognize the District 26 state senator for her advocacy on behalf of Texas students for an equitable school finance system.
1:30 p.m. at Green Elementary School, 122 W. Whittier at South Presa Street
In preparation of their upcoming Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills science exam, 5th-graders will challenge faculty and staff to a round of questions in a format based upon the TV game show.
April 26 (Mon) — School Board work session and meeting
5:30 p.m. at Crockett Elementary, 2215 Morales St
The regularly-scheduled School Board meeting will follow the work session.
April 28 (Wed) — ‘Paying Our Fair Share’ property tax workshop
6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Pearl Studio, 200 E. Grayson St., suite 115
The community is invited to learn about the services their taxes support, as well as how they may effectively dispute their tax appraisals. The workshop is sponsored by 123 District State Rep. Mike Villarreal, SAISD, and variety of other entities and individuals.
April 29 (Thurs) - Walters Street Commercial and Residential Design Charrette
6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Pershing Elementary School, 600 Sandmeyer St.
This is the final of three meetings to gather community input on improving the Fort Sam Houston-area
street, as well as the adjacent neighborhood
April 30 (Fri) — 100 Percent Campaign kickoff
3 to 6 p.m. at Guadalupe Plaza, 1327 Guadalupe St
SAISD will be holding a 100% Campaign Kick-Off CHIP and Children's Medicaid Outreach Event. The goal of the 100% Campaign is to identify uninsured eligible children in SAISD and enroll them with affordable health care. In order to apply families should bring copies of the following documents: copy of social security card, copy of child's birth certificate, two most recent paystubs or last year's W-2 tax form. If you have any child care expenses, you should bring proof of these as well. May 1 (Sat) — Komen San Antonio ‘Race for the Cure’
7:30 a.m. opening ceremony at the Alamodome, 100 Montana St.
For the third consecutive year SAISD employees will comprise the city’s largest contingent when they join walkers and runners in this cause for breast cancer research. The District’s Carmen Ng, who is a cancer survivor, is serving as one of the “faces” of this year’s Komen San Antonio Race for the Cure campaign.
May 1 (Sat) — The Met: HD Live in Schools program
Noon at the Regal Fiesta 16 Stadium Theatre, 12631 Vance Jackson Ave.
“Armida,” by Italian composer Gioachino Antonio Rossini, is the final of three live opera broadcasts that select District middle school choir students and their directors will see this semester. For the second consecutive year, SAISD was chosen among school districts nationwide for this program providing opportunities to experience New York’s Metropolitan Opera performances beamed directly from the Lincoln Center. Participation is part of a comprehensive fine arts lesson including vocals, music, history, set design, costuming and theater.
