May 10 (Mon) — Book donation dedication ceremony
10:15 a.m. at Beacon Hill Elementary School, 1411 W. Ashby Place

Following the ceremony, a reception will be held to thank community members Don and Carolyn White for their gift of $3,700 to purchase books for all 560 Beacon Hill students. 

May 11 (Tues) — Annual White Rose Induction ceremony
6 p.m. at Jefferson High School, 723 Donaldson Ave.

Members of the class of 2017 will be welcomed into the Young Women’s Leadership Academy by accepting a white rose as their names are called. The ceremony is in honor of their selection as incoming 6th-graders this fall at San Antonio’s only all-girls public school.

May 12 (Wed) — Career on Wheels Day
8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Highland Hills Elementary School, 734 Glamis Ave.

Accompanied by the vehicles they use in the workforce, presenters will represent professions including energy, engineering, firefighting, health, law enforcement, and public transportation. 

May 12 (Wed) — SAISD students to be honored by VIA for 2010 Youth Art Contest
11:30 a.m. at Aldaco’s Restaurant Sunset Station, 100 Hoefgen Ave.

Nine District artists will be among nearly 30 from throughout San Antonio recognized during an awards luncheon. As first and second place winners, they also will receive savings bonds for their posters created under the theme “Riding VIA is the SMART WAY SA!” 

May 12 (Wed) — Distributive Education Clubs of America 9th-Annual Banquet
6:30 p.m. at Brackenridge High School, 400 Eagleland Drive at South St. Mary’s Street

Marketing Education Program students and staff will express their appreciation to parents and business partners by treating them to dinner and entertainment provided by the school’s Mariachi Aguila. 

May 13 (Thurs) — 2010 Art Showcase
5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Alamo Convocation Center, 110 Tuleta

Art enthusiasts can view creations representing a variety of mediums – ranging from traditional water color paintings to multidimensional displays – crafted by students from all grade levels. Each spring this event is held to promote the value of an art education in developing higher-order thinking, cultural awareness, and creativity. “People’s Choice” and “Teacher’s Choice” awards will be determined based upon the number of stars patrons and instructors place beside their favorites. The elementary, middle and high school students whose artwork garners the most will receive ribbons and their piece will be displayed for a week at the Burnet Center, 406 Barrera St. 

May 13 (Thurs) — Governor to host college fair
5:30 to 7 p.m. at Brackenridge High School, 400 Eagleland Drive at South St. Mary’s St.

Rick Perry will be joined by state Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman and Texas Commissioner of Higher Education Raymund Paredes in promoting higher education through the “Generation Adelante! ¡Generación Forward!” college fair. Representatives from more than 30 Texas colleges and universities have been invited to answer questions and provide information about their schools. The fair is open to the public.

May 14 (Fri) — Career Day awareness program
9 a.m. at W.W. White Elementary School, 545 W.W. White Road

A panel of special guests including elected officials, educators and business professionals has been invited to encourage students to seek higher education and careers.

May 14 (Fri) — A Su Salud safety contest awards ceremony
1:30 p.m. at Hillcrest Elementary School, 211 W. Malone Ave.

Representatives from the competition’s sponsors, along with San Antonio Police Chief William McManus, Texas 118 District Rep. Joe Farias, and Sparky the Fire Dog, are scheduled to be among those celebrating this South Side school having the most winning entries.  Artwork created by five Hillcrest students has been chosen for inclusion in the annual “How I Stay Safe” calendar. The competition is sponsored by the University Health System, the San Antonio Children’s Museum, Magic 105.3-FM., Santikos Theatres, Smashburger, and Splashtown San Antonio.

May 15 (Sat) — Gifted & Talented / Advanced Placement Conference
8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Edison High School, 701 Santa Monica Drive near Blanco Road

Educators from area school districts are invited to attend this conference hosted by SAISD’s Department of Academic Services.  

May 15 (Sat) — Family Fitness Challenge and Wellness Fair
9 a.m. to noon at Poe Middle School, 814 Aransas Ave.

SAISD families are encouraged to get on the wellness wagon through attending this and other upcoming health-related fairs. Services will include diabetes, cholesterol and other screenings, CPR training, body mass index measurements, Zumba dance exhibitions, table tennis demonstrations, and classes on cooking and nutrition.

May 15 (Sat) — SAISD Secondary Teacher Job Fair
9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Marriott Plaza Hotel Hidalgo Ballroom, 555 S. Alamo St.

Initial screening interviews will be held for fully-certified educators and teacher candidates enrolled in alternative certification programs who are qualified to teach grades 6-12. Applicants may park free nearby at SAISD’s Central Office lot, 141 Lavaca St. The application process begins online at
